Using the IoT ready open standard protocol, MQTT, semantic sensor data is delivered to the application layer over a secure, scalable, resilient wireless SmartMesh IP mesh network.
Wzzard™ uses the lightweight, publish/subscribe messaging transport MQTT protocol for sensor communications. MQTT is an extremely simple messaging protocol created for M2M and IoT applications over wireless networks. Because of its efficient distribution of information to single or multiple receivers, low power usage and minimized data packets, it is ideal for mobile or remote locations.
SmartMesh IP is based on 6LoWPAN and wireless IEEE 802.15.4e standards. SmartMesh IP creates full-mesh networks, sometimes referred to as “mesh-to-the-edge” networks. SmartMesh IP networks use a “triple-play” of wireless mesh technologies—time diversity, frequency diversity, and physical diversity—to assure reliability, resiliency, scalability, power source flexibility, and ease-of-use. The Wzzard Intelligent Edge Nodes accommodate a broad range industry-standard external sensors. The Nodes can collect data from up to 3 external sensors from a wide variety of interface options, including general purpose analog inputs, digital inputs/outputs and thermocouples. Nodes can also contain internal sensors like an accelerometer and temperature and can integrate other application specific sensors upon request. Wzzard Intelligent Edge Nodes are available in both industrial (Wzzard) and commercial (WzzardC) form factors. Sensor connections are made via conduit fitting, cable gland, terminal block or an M12 connector. Nodes are available with an integrated or longer range external antenna, allowing for connectivity distance of up to 500 meters outdoors and 200 meters indoors.
The Wzzard Intelligent Edge Node collects data from the sensor; then organizes and transforms that data into useful and relevant information easing the processing burden on upstream resources. Configurable by smart phone or tablet, nodes can minimize data traffic by only communicating exceptions to specified threshold or pre-determined alert levels. If the gateway is using the cellular network, this reduces the cost of the data plan.
The Spectre Network Gateway connects to the SmartMesh IP wireless mesh network and the Wzzard Intelligent Edge nodes through an integrated 802.15.4e radio. The Spectre Network Gateway receives the incoming data stream from edge nodes in MQTT-SN format and converts the information into MQTT protocol for transport to an MQTT broker on your network or on the Internet. The leading IoT applications providers include MQTT brokers in their solutions, and open source MQTT brokers are available for installation on private networks.

The Spectre Network Gateway is built for plug-and-play simplicity with extensive remote management, deployment and customization options. It connects Ethernet equipment and other devices to the Internet or intranet via either 3G cellular or 10/100 wired Ethernet. The standard configuration includes a 10/100 Ethernet port, USB host port, binary input/output (I/O) port and an 802.15.4e radio. It also has an auxiliary port that can be configured for other purposes, like Ethernet or RS-232/485/422.
